The uniquely natural, harmonious, graceful, and refined language of Chinese poetry has remained the mainstream of Chinese literature throughout history. For over three thousand years since these lines were written, Chinese literature has seen composition of numerous marvelous poems. The muse of Chinese poetry lives on. Among these poems, those of the Tang and Sung dynasties, 618 to 1279 A.D. were the most popular and indulged. We now take you back to the Tang Dynasty and see some of the greatest poets at that time.
In high spirits I write, and thereby shake the five mountains. As a poem is accomplished I shout in ecstasy, I'll bend the river.
Those two lines were written by Li Po to portray himself. The poet's name may sound simple yet his life is a legendary one, throughout which he wrote over 1000 moving poems. Du Fu, a great poet and contemporary of Li, once described him with the following two lines.
When his hand moves across the paper, the moon and the rain are frightened. When the poem is accomplished, the spirits and gods are moved to tears.
Those two lines about Li's poems didn't exaggerate. Had not been for these poems, Tang Dynasty's poems would've shone with less splendor.
Li Po once wrote, "The waters of the Yellow River descend from heaven," but it was the poet himself who seemed to have the powers of an angel. His unbounded inspiration and casual, elegant bearing are still well loved today. He is outstanding not only among poets of the Tang Dynasty but also among writers of the whole world.
He was truly one of a kind, and today we have the honor to introduce the heavenly poet, Li :Po.
Li Po's origin has always been shrouded in mystery, probably because one of his ancestors was once exiled to those areas beyond the Great Wall. According to the poet himself, his ancestors were from what is approximately today's Gansu Province. And one of them was a Han Dynasty general stationed on the border. No doubt he believed his ancestors were from the same place as the ancestors of the royal family. And the general he referred to was a great hero named Li Guang. According to the latest study, Li Po was born in the city of Suiyuan, which was then under the occupation of the ancient Turks.
In 705 A.D., when Li was five, his father brought the whole family back to China and settled down in Qing Lian, Chang Ming in Si Chuan Province. This is the reason why later, the poet named himself the Recluse of Qing Lian. Li Po left his hometown at the age 25. At the time, young Li Po was full of ambition, and always carried a sword with him. Ardent and proud, he was unwilling to comprise with the practical demands of the world. During middle age, Li had three years of success. After that, he suffered constant setbacks of failures, and was very miserable in the later years of his life. All these severe failures inspired Li Po to write many poems which trufully recorded the poet's frustrated life.
Li Po's three year stay in Chang An was a turning point in his life. Emperor Xuan Zhong, impressed with his poetic talent, made him an official to the Imperial Academy. Though wasn't much of a post, the poet was treated with great respect. It was said that once the emperor used his handkerchief to clean the poet's mouth after the poet had vomited. And at once the emperor himself prepared a bowel of soup for the poet.
Deng Lu shi, the emperor's favorite eunuch, was said to have taken off the poet's boots for him. And the emperor's most favorite concubine, Lady Yang, was said to hold the ink stone for him when he wrote. All these showed how much the emperor valued Li Po.
In 756 A.D., when An Lu Shan led rebel troops to capture Chang An and Luoyang, Li Po was living in seclusion on a mountain. He'd been away from Chang An for 12 years. When ?, the emperor's 16th son, retreated to areas south of the Yangtze River and intended to make himself a new emperor, Li Po saw a new hope for his political career, he immediately jointed the prince to serve under him. Full of ambition, he wrote, "With the wisdom of Dang Shan Shie An Shi, I can easily help quell the loosely organized rebel troops." Li Po had wanted to stage a political comeback.. Unfortunately, Prince Li was defeated and killed. Li Po was put into prison. Thanks to a petition by Guo Zi Yi who was once helped by Li, Li Po's sentence was commuted to exile in Vietnam, in what is today's Gui Zhou Province. The poet however was given a pardon before reaching his destination. He was nearly 60 years old at that time. In 762, aged Li Po went to live with an uncle who was a magistrate. He died of an illness in November of that year. It was falsely rumored that the poet drowned himself for trying to fish up the reflection of the moon in the water.
